Yogapoint Kids TTC

11/01/2017

First, we must try and understand what yoga is for ourselves. Yoga is a way of life, a way of understanding a pure and essential truth of existence. Once we begin to understand what yoga means through our personal experience then we have an opportunity to begin to share that understanding with our children.

The Kids TTC is more than an opportunity to learn poses and yoga games to teach children, it is an exploration into what is most meaningful in life and how can we share those realizations with children. In addition to how yoga helps children become more flexible, improves their balance and coordination, helps them stay focused and reduces stress, it also teaches children about how to live their lives. As teachers, parents and caregivers we learn how to help children develop into their fullest potential.

Sri Aurobindo says, “Each child has their own dharama, the law on how they will develop and move through life. This dharma grows and manifests through experience which must be natural and not twisted by our vision or interference. The child must learn how to listen to that dharma and follow the ultimate knowledge and truth within themselves. The teacher’s responsibility is to recognize the true needs and interests of the child and offer an activity to support those needs.”

In the world today it is common to impose our views on children and clutter their intuition and innocence with a necessity for materialistic success above all else. We rarely give children the space and freedom they require to develop into that which they are meant to become. Children and young adults often feel weighed down and overwhelmed by the academic demands and societal pressure. This stress leads to a range of other problems that disturb their peace and well being.

There is no question that the current ways of education and views of child development need to be reevaluated. We have an opportunity to improve the lives of children around the world, we as yoga teachers have a gift to bring to children. Let us share with children the power of moving with conscious awareness, breathing deeply, connecting with all that is around us and living with gratitude and kindness in every moment.

As His Holiness The Dalai Lama says, "If every 8 year old in the world is taught meditation, we will eliminate violence from the world in one generation." The more we can learn about children, what they need and how yoga can help their development, the better we can lead them to a more meaningful and peaceful life. The benefits of yoga for children are infinite. Any child, regardless of age, physical or mental condition can benefit from yoga. The practical and philosophical applications of yoga for children is the focus of the Kids Yoga TTC. Yoga Vidya Gurukul looks forward to sharing it with you this November!
