Yoga
psychology is as vast and as complex as the subject it seeks
to understand, the mind itself. ‘What is a mind’
it asks, a question that philosophers and scientists have been
struggling with for millennia. Many theories have evolved, from
the materialistic belief that mind is purely a component of
the physical brain, to the transpersonal, esoteric belief, that
the mind is an emanation of consciousness, and therefore exists
in every cell of the being.
In yoga psychology, mind and body are viewed as a single indivisible
unit. The physical body is the gross aspect of the body-mind,
and the mind is the subtle aspect. They are inseparable, in
the same way that structure and function are inseparable. Improving
the condition of the mind also improves the condition of the
body, and vice versa.
The
mind is viewed as a complex energetic processes that deals with
all aspects of knowing and knowledge, with the development and
expression of the individual personality (or ego).
The
investigative tools of yoga psychology are one’s own awareness
and the process of meditation. Meditation techniques, derived
from yoga and tantra, aim to reveal the processes of the body-mind
objectively, and to manage and cultivate its energy and scope
for higher living. Yoga psychology is not just intellectual
study but experiential. It allows us to experience the mind,
discipline and creatively channel its power for higher purpose.
Yoga
psychology challenges us to take a more conscious role in developing
our hearts and minds, in seeing the connection between our individual
selves and the greater universe. How can we use our intelligence
creatively to build a better life for ourselves and the world?
In yoga psychology we learn how universal laws govern the individual.
Awareness of these laws allows us to live a more conscious life.
-Dr.
Shankardev Saraswati
