Guru pournima – Celebration of evolving human consciousness

By Gandhar Mandlik

Guru word in Sanskrit means remover of darkness, the one that brings light in to life. Light is Sattva, darkness is Tamas. Guru initiates the journey from Tamas to Sattva. This journey to light is sattva, purity, peace, positivity, harmony. Idea of Guru is this energy that brings positive, peaceful, harmonious state, and evolves the consciousness.

Gurupournima is the day to remember and refresh our direction of life. Everyday there are negative events, triggering stress, anxiety, unhappiness and this leads to health problems, social problems, violence and destruction. This negativity makes us forget the positivity and positive direction. Gurupournima is the day to commit ourselves again on this positive journey.
On this day, we remember people who gave this wisdom to us. We offer them respect to appreciate their contribution to our positive journey. Is this respect necessary? Do we have to be grateful to people? This people have done their duty so why I should pay respect and spend my time? The answer to this ego driven problem is in the question itself.
Ego is a big destroyer in our life. It creates stress, anger, breaks relationships, results in wars, hatred, jealousy, terrorism. It destroys our health, peace and happiness. How to deal with this ego? Yoga masters believed in “surrender to Guru” as a way to control ego. Complete removal of ego is not possible and is also not good for survival. But control over ego is very helpful. Surrendering to Guru is a way to control mental thoughts away from ego.
Surrender is all for creating a state of mind where there is no ego, worry, anxiety, stress. The solutions to all our problems is in keeping calm, balance in every difficult situation. Surrender allows the mind to work without prejudice. Surrender makes the mind more creative. Creativity is important for finding solutions to our problems.
Surrender makes our mind more open to different views, ideas and solutions. This openness is one of the most important ideas Yoga masters thought of surrender to Guru.
Let us celebrate this openness with surrender to Guru on this auspicious day of Gurupournima.
